A man is sitting on Tahrir Square with a shoe on his head. It is April 2011 and the largest united demonstration since the beginning of the Revolution is unfolding on the square. The man with the shoe on his head holds a handwritten sign: Apologies! This is the shoe of one of the martyrs, I don’t know if he was Muslim or Christian. I carry it on my head and this is the most I can do for the martyrs. I am sorry. In a bar in Berlin two artists drink beer and discuss the urgent political surges of a distant world - indifferently balancing a shoe on each their head. Shoes of the Martyrs is an ongoing project dealing with the responsibility and implications of the contemporary artist involved in national and international political critique. Shoes of the martyrs is a collaboration with visual artist Soren Thilo Funder.
